You know a place where the sun doesn't shine, And every night is cold You wander around with no sense what to do, The gleam in your eyes growing old You're waiting for some other sign To lead you high above the clouds, Where you can gaze upon the beauty of the stars, And sing the song that lives inside your heart I know a place where the moon sheds a tear, Consoled by the breath of dawn Where hope is a fragrance contained in the bloom Of smiles where laughter is born Allow me to show you the way To find your place among the stars, And you will sing the song that lives inside your heart, I want to hear the song that plays inside your heart Embracing their shadow and clutching their light, The souls of the morning come To dance every dance in the warmth of the sun, Breathing and grieving as one Tread lightly, the dew at your feet; Embalm those souls left in the dark And you will gaze upon the beauty of the stars, And sing the song that lives inside your heart

about

Millie’s debut release as leader is a distillation of the thoughts and feelings of a neurodivergent, queer musician navigating extended isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. It exists as an expression of rawness, embracing the erratic and uncertain lines woven between queerness and jazz and establishing processes of healing.

'Octagyn' draws inspiration from a variety of sources, bridging Bheki Mseleku, Kenny Garrett, Kenny Wheeler, Mulgrew Miller and Julian Joseph, forging a space for both introspection and flamboyance to coalesce. It was launched to a live audience of over 100 on January 24th, 2023 at Evanston SPACE.

'Octagyn' was recorded with other members of the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy under the World Heart Beat label in London. Read more about the 'Octagyn' project here: www.millietrumpet.com/post/queering-the-path-reclaiming-hidden-identities-feeding-the-inner-child-the-story-behind-octagyn

With immeasurable gratitude to the World Heart Beat Music Academy, most notably Sahana and James Gero, Nick Cohen and Jim Sorenson, for their unwavering support, invaluable expertise and tireless work in bringing this album into existence. With love and appreciation to Julian and James Joseph, Trevor Watkis, Tony Kofi, Byron Wallen, Alex Thomas-French and all others involved in the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy, for sharing with me the science of swing and providing me with the most colourful musical home. This includes Plumm, Dan Jacob-Ormson, Milo Fox, Ruben Ross, James Wade-Sired, Jason Ansere, Emile Hinton, Menelik Claffey and Wilf Cameron Marples for their stellar contributions to this recording. With happiness and celebration to Lewis Gibbs, Cameron Todd, Phillip Bainbridge and Gerard Presencer for being as much friends as teachers and mentors, the latter bridging 775 miles across the North Sea to show me the way into my sound. With warmth and fondness to all my friends, new and old, who continue to bless me with their time and patience. And, most importantly, with boundless love to my beautiful parents and sister, without whom none of the above would matter.
